Family Fun and Sports
Professionals recommend that we all do a certain amount of exercise in order to stay fit and healthy. The recommended amount will vary from person to person and is dependent on factors such as age, health and existing fitness, but it’s something which is important for everyone. Here are a few ideas for games and sports which can help you and your family to get active:
- Go for a bike ride. People say you never forget how to ride a bike, so test the theory out! A short ride through a local park can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. As you begin to feel more confident and more physically fit, you can start to go further afield.
- Have a game of bowling. The games which you choose don’t have to be strenuous in order to be good for you. Bowling is a fun way of doing some gentle activity which is suitable for everyone.
- Visit a crazy golf course. Again, this isn’t necessarily going to be the most strenuous of activities, but it’s something which will get you moving and increase your heart rate. If you enjoy it and find you have a bit of a knack, you could try upgrading to a real golf course.
- Have a volleyball competition. This is a good one if you have a large family or are entertaining a lot of people. An indoor volleyball team is larger than a beach volleyball team, but the rules have changed over time and it’s quite flexible as a game. If you want to you can have up to 12 people playing at once.
- Take a trip to an outdoor activity centre. There are all kinds of new things you can try, from thrill-seeking activities such as zip wiring and abseiling to water-based sports like kayaking and waterskiing. If you want a more laid-back activity, perhaps you can give something like orienteering or archery a go.
- Invest in a trampoline. It will provide hours of fun, and is great for fitness. Multiple people can use it at the same time as long as you have the correct safety equipment.
- Play badminton. You can play with as few as 2 people, and the equipment you need is pretty cheap.
- Visit a snowdome. You can do a multitude of activities, including snowboarding, skiing and tobogganing. It’s a brilliant way to try something a bit different whilst also encouraging children to be active.
- Go on an activity holiday. It’s exciting to try something totally different which you’ve never done before whilst you have enough time to get properly stuck in. Some popular ideas include skiing, mountain biking, hiking or an adventure trip where you can try out various activities. If you enjoy it, you can always do it again next year!
- Go for a walk. This gives you a chance to spend time together as a family where you can have a catch-up as well as doing something active. If the weather’s good, take a picnic along and make a day of it.
